The Friday Five - Lessons Learned
Thoughts on a few things I learned this week. Can you think of anything you learned recently? What did you learn? No, really....what did you learn?
Excellent customer service exists. My first phone call ever to Fastrak resulted in a lovely conversation with James who was super thorough with the kindest demeanor. My default seems to expect a yuck experience when I dial 1-800-ANYTHING but thinking back, my phone conversations are usually delightful. Now the number maze to get to a “representative” can raise my blood pressure but once through, James and others are ready and waiting with a verbal smile. Hopefully, my verbal smile back to them makes their job more enjoyable, too. Other stores winning the phone game: Container Store, Room and Board, and MetLife Dental (believe it!).
Mattering matters. I learned so much on this podcast that…I need to listen to it again. Anyone else get so absorbed in something, and then, when you try to explain it to a friend, you fail miserably? That’s me. Often. In summary, I feel challenged to expose my kids to situations that make them feel they matter outside of school and sports. I’d provide more deep insight but think its best if you just trust me on this one and give it a listen. K? Thx.
I’m hesitant to ask for help sometimes…a lot times? As I was leaving the needlepoint store, Marta chimed in, “There’s a 1-800 number on the tag - call us if you get stuck!” I loved how old school that felt and immediately thought, “Who gets stuck?” Joke’s on me as I’ve been stuck for days and still haven’t called, allowing myself to get more and more frustrated each night. (I think this characteristic may pervade more of my life than the needle and thread.) Hold please while I call Marta.
Many friends/acquaintances are stronger than I ever realized. Recall my pity party earlier this week? My little situation is just that - little - feeling more inconvenient than scary. I know too many that have gone to a doctor’s appointment and received truly life-altering news - extremely inconvenient and beyond terrifying. My admiration has skyrocketed for all who are enduring so much more. Is that you? Join me in taking a moment to reflect on just how strong, determined and incredible you are.
Ziplining exists nearby - great?!. Spring Break this year has half of my family venturing to Washington, D.C. (bless chaperone Scott and 105 eigth graders), and the other half (Grant and me) staying here. Captain Fun Mom will be playing all the games and scavenger hunts at the coastal playground called Timber Cove and ziplining through the Redwoods in Occidental. Current mantra - Stay young-ish flying through the air. Heights are fun. Stay young-ish flying through the air. Heights are fun.
Timber Cove - a family favorite - crashing waves, all the games and fire pits aplenty.
Wishing all of you a great, sunshiny weekend and enlightening week ahead. Go be the great human you are and learn something. There’s so much waiting out there…just for you.
